The Sir Victor Davies Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship is supported by funds bequeathed by Lady Davies in memory of her husband. The funds are managed by the Sir Victor Davies Foundation for Research into Ornamental Horticulture (see www.svdf.org.nz). The Foundation supports research into all areas of ornamental horticulture but with particular emphasis into studies on ornamental trees and shrubs.

1.

The Sir Victor Davies Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship is intended for the support of staff and students enrolled at postgraduate level in studies of ornamental horticulture. Preference will be given to supporting students studying at New Zealand tertiary institutes.

2.

Scholarships are offered to a maximum value of $3000 per student per annum for a maximum of two years for Masters studies and for a maximum of three years for those undertaking PhD study. Scholarships will be awarded as funds permit and subject to the discretion of the SVDF trustees. No extensions to these time limits will be granted.

3.

Recommendations for the awards shall be made by staff in each respective Tertiary Institute who is applying for the scholarship. Each Tertiary Institute will advise the Chairman of the Trust of their choice for the award within the candidates from their particular Tertiary Institute.

4.

In recommending awards the Tertiary Institute staff shall take into account academic merit and other scholarships and bursaries held by the applicants. Recommendations for a grant shall be based on the candidate's academic attainment and potential to meet the research objective.

5.

The funds sought must be used to pay for research costs associated with the proposed project. The funds will be granted to the Tertiary Institute and managed for the benefit of the student's research.

6.

The student and supervisor will provide a progress report on the funded project by 1 December each year. This will be accompanied with a statement from the supervisor about the student's performance over the previous 12 month period. Continued funding within the scholarship period will only be granted where there is satisfactory progress being made.

7.

Unless otherwise negotiated, payments will be made annually in one lump sum on 1 April subject to successful progess being made on the research project being undertaken.

8.

Applications should be made to the Trust at any time but preferably before 1 April each year. The application form is available below.
