Neville Victor Davies - Appointed Trustee
Neville is the younger son of Sir Victor and Lady Davies. Born, bred and educated in New Plymouth he followed his chosen career path of commercial accounting, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1958. After 10 years learning his accountancy “craft” - Ivon Watkins Ltd, Ford Motor Company Ltd and Ajax GKN Ltd he joined the family company. Holding senior management positions through to Managing Director in 1976 he was the last of the family involved in Duncan and Davies until it was sold in 1985.
Active over the years in both industry and community affairs including 20+ years as an executive member of the New Zealand Nuserymens Association (now known as NGIA) for which he was honoured with life membership in 2005.
9 years as Chairman of Taranaki Parks and Reserves Board, an active Rotarian recognised by a Paul Harris Fellow award and a long time Board Member of the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust.
Ian Alexander Duncalf - Nominee of Nursery and Garden Industry Association
1975 Graduated from Massey University with a B. Hort. Sc Hons (Nursery Production)
1975 to 1978 Worked as a Scientist with the Soil and Water Division of the Ministry of Works at the Plant Materials Centre at Aokautere doing applied plant research into plants for soil conservation purposes.
1979/80 Joined the research staff at Massey University as the Officer in Charge of the Nursery Research Centre. Working closely with the nursery industry and under the direction of Murray Richards doing very applied nursery orientated research.
1981/83 Joined Duncan and Davies nursery as Research and Development manager. Established and managed a cut-flower growing operation and assisted in the conversion of part of the nursery into a kiwifruit orchard. Also worked closely with the nursery production staff in assisting with variety development and production improvements.
1984/86 Appointed Production Manager at Duncan and Davies nurseries New Plymouth a very large nursery producing plants for both the export and domestic markets in both containers and the open ground.
1986/88 Production Manager of Green House Park in Katikati an export cut-flower growing operation with a focus on orchid production.
1988 Purchased the existing Mail Order nursery Parva Plants Ltd, a company specializing in the production of perennials and interesting and unusual plants. Have run this business along with my wife and staff of 6 for the past 19 years and plan, in the next 3 months, to sell Parva to focus on a number of other horticultural exploits.
Ian James Warrington - Nominee of Massey University
Ian Warrington graduated from Massey University with a First Class Masters degree in Horticultural Science in 1972, and received a Doctor of Science degree in 1989.
He began his research career in the DSIR and, over the following 30 years, he became know nationally and internationally for his work in environmental physiology and on improving the training and management methods for apples and kiwifruit. Ian’s work also helped to develop new export flower crops such as nerines. Until recently he was Professor of Horticulture and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Massey University and is currently a Principal Consultant within the Martech Consulting Group.
Much of Ian’s scientific research has focused on plant responses to environmental factors such as temperature, light intensity, day length and carbon dioxide concentration. He has published over 120 refereed papers primarily in the area of environmental physiology.
He co-edited the books “Kiwifruit: Science and Management”, and “Apples: Botany, production and Uses” which detail research and production information on these crops from around the world.
In 1994, Ian became the first New Zealander to be made a Fellow of the American Society for Horticultural Science. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and a Fellow of the New Zealand Society for Horticultural Science. He is currently the Co-Vice President of the International Horticultural Congress, Brisbane, Australia - August 2014. In 2001 he was awarded an Honorary Degree in Literature from Massey University. Ian was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2011 New Year Honours.
Alan Dean Jellyman - Nominee of Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust
Alan joined Duncan and Davies Limited as an apprentice in 1957 having met Sir Victor on a sales visit to Wanganui. He completed his National Diploma of Horticulture for RNZIH in 1962 winning the Cockayne Gold Medal.
He began a career in public parks management and administration in 1962 when appointed Assistant Curator of Pukekura Park and was then appointed Director of Parks and Recreation for New Plymouth City Council in 1977. Upon the formation of the New Plymouth District Council in 1989 he was appointed Community Services Manager, a position held until his retirement in 2000.
A life member of the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust and former Board Chairman, an Associate of Honour of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and recipient of the Veitch Memorial Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society in 2003.
John Victor Davies - Appointed Trustee
John is the grandson of Sir Victor Davies and Lady Davies. John grew up on the Duncan and Davies nursery spending his holidays working with the family firm. After leaving college he went on to further his horticultural legacy, by completing an apprenticeship with George Rainey’s Nursery in Auckland.
Since then John has owned and operated Avondale Garden Centre before reopening Model Nurseries a wholesale container nursery in west Auckland. Relocating to Matakana in 1996, where to this day he runs a very successful garden Centre called Tumbleweed Coastal Plants with his partner Wendy Schick.
